City of Salem website - Information architecture redesign
Delivered a full IA redesign of the City of Salem, MA municipal website, improving navigation, hierarchy, and mobile usability for residents.
Problem statement:
The City of Salem website suffered from competing calls to action and a cluttered information hierarchy, making even routine tasks frustrating. Residents struggled to find basic services, such as trash collection schedules. On mobile, the experience was simply the desktop site scaled down and unusable in practice.
My role:
Sole UX designer working end-to-end: user research and interviews, competitive analysis, sitemap redesign, wireframing, and mobile design.
Process:
User interviews identified where residents consistently got stuck and what they most needed to find quickly. A competitive analysis of peer municipal sites surfaced IA patterns that work. Findings drove a restructured sitemap that prioritized high-traffic services and reduced competing calls to action, followed by wireframes and a purpose-built mobile view.
Outcome:
The redesign was implemented and received positively by city stakeholders. Deliverables included a revised sitemap, desktop wireframes, and a mobile experience designed from the ground up rather than simply a shrunken desktop view.
